California Forest Improvement Program
The purpose of the California Forest Improvement Program (CFIP) program is to encourage private and public investment in, and improved management of, California forest lands and resources. This focus is to ensure adequate high quality timber supplies, related employment and other economic benefits, and the protection, maintenance, and enhancement of a productive and stable forest resource system for the benefit of present and future generations.
The program scope includes the improvement of all forest resources including fish and wildlife habitat, and soil and water quality. Cost-share assistance is provided to private and public ownerships containing 20 to 5,000 acres of forest land. Cost-shared activities include management planning, site preparation, tree purchase and planting, timber stand improvement, fish and wildlife habitat improvement, and land conservation practices.
The source of funds for CFIP projects historically has come from California's Forest Resource Improvement Fund (FRIF). CAL FIRE may also receive funding from a variety of other State and Federal sources. Different funding sources may have different requirements or additional application procedures. Be sure to discuss this with your Forestry Assistance Specialist (FAS) at the CAL FIRE unit in which your project resides, the Regional FAS, or call the CFIP program manager in Sacramento. FUNDING AVAILABLE NOW
We wish to inform Forest Landowners of new funding opportunities for the California Forest Improvement Program (CFIP)- CAL FIRE been awarded a two year appropriation from the Timber Regulation and Forest Restoration Fund (TRFRF).
- FY 2015-- $2,950,000 for CFIP cost share grants;
- FY 2016-- $3,465,000 for CFIP cost share grants
- Grants will be available state wide
- Grants can fund the full-suite of CFIP activities: Plans, RPF supervision, site preparation, planting, pre-commercial thinning, pruning, follow-up, release and conservation practices; e.g. forest road repair and upgrading, if it protects, maintains, or enhances fish and wildlife habitat.
- Landowners/RPFs are to send completed and signed applications to the CALFIRE Unit in which their proposed project will occur.
- Units will review, recommend and send applications to Sacramento
- Once Sacramento receives them they will notify landowners and develop the standard CFIP agreements with the landowner.
- If funds for your project aren't available, the application will be kept on file by the local CAL FIRE Unit Forester or FAS. When funding is available you will be notified to prepare and send in any additional paperwork needed to complete the (Contract) Agreement Package. *A complete Application consists of application (pages 1-2), the Project Summary (page 3), the Project Description, and all required maps.
Landowners wishing to apply for CFIP are encouraged to contact their CAL FIRE Unit Forester or the unit's Forestry Assistance Specialist (FAS), or their Registered Professional Forester (RPF) for assistance in developing their application package. *The CFIP application must include an Application Form, a Project Summary, Project Description and a Map of the proposed project.
See the 2017 CFIP User's Guide for more information. The funding rate requested must be explained and justified in the Project Description. Failure to adequate describe the project could result in delays or denial of approval.
CFIP applications may be submitted* at any time to the CALFIRE Unit in which the project occurs.
After the CAL FIRE forester receives your application, he or she will meet with you and your RPF to look at your project and get an overview of your property. Any needed modifications to your project and/or revisions to the application package will be discussed at this time. Once the project is approved and funding is available, you will be notified to prepare an Agreement package.
